My project begins with a common misconception. Type “archaeologist” into a search engine, and you will likely see images of people hunched over trenches, unearthing bones and relics deemed “valuable.” But is this truly representative of what archaeologists do? I, Jivan Güner, an excavation photographer—or an “eye on the inside,” as I like to call myself—aim to challenge these portrayals. In my series, “Archaeology at Sardis: Beyond the Trenches,” I take you behind the scenes, beyond the “No Entry!” signs to capture the day-to-day realities of these professionals.
