Hasankeyf, 2012 – Cultural Heritage
Hasankeyf is a historic settlement located within the borders of Batman province, straddling both banks of the Tigris River. With its rich historical layers, cultural depth, and natural landscape, Hasankeyf was more than just a town—it was a significant cultural and ecological heritage site that bore witness to the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia.
However, dam projects and hydroelectric power plants not only submerged the enduring traces of this region, but also profoundly transformed the lives of its residents.
These photographs, taken in 2012, show the history and culture of Hasankeyf—now submerged beneath water—that have since been lost. What unfolded here represents not only environmental destruction but also a violation of collective rights.
