The Ezidis are an ancient Mesopotamian people who speak Kurdish and have traces of Zoroastrianism in their beliefs. They follow a unique monotheistic faith, worshipping the Peacock Angel (Melek Taus). Throughout history, they have faced persecution, with over 72 massacres and 80 exiles recorded. In 2014, ISIS targeted the Yazidis in Shengal, committing genocide, killing thousands, and abducting many women and children. Ezidi women, in particular, were subjected to sexual violence and slavery.
In 2016, the Yenişehir Camp in Amed (Diyarbakir), Turkey, became a temporary refuge for thousands of Yazidis fleeing this violence. The camp, largely populated by women and children, was a place where they struggled with the trauma of losing or having family members abducted. The camp became a vivid reflection of the historical traumas that continue to shape the Ezidi community.
